WORKSHOP: Dancing to the Music: A Dancer’s Guide to the Rhythmic Layers of Salsa Music with Aaron Damus (all levels) - Join Aaron and learn about the fundamentals of rhythm, rhythmic and melodic phrasing, poly-rhythms, song structure, and how all those things come together in Salsa music. These blocks of knowledge will help bring the music into the dialogue of dance when dancing with a partner, allowing dancers to phrase your partnerwork together with the song’s phrasing, find space in the dance to add styling, and anticipate the musical breaks. Aaron will also discuss the rhythmic subtleties between Salsa styles and how they relate to the music, as well as how to improve at finding the “1”. The class will consist of active listening, rhythm drills, and some dancing. This workshop is appropriate for dancers of all skill levels.
Born and raised in Miami, Aaron grew up surrounded by the influences of Afro-Caribbean culture. At 5 years old, he began his formal training in music, beginning with classical piano. Formal vocal training followed in his early teens and at 18, while a senior in prep school, Aaron became the youngest person to be hired as a professional chorister with the Florida Grand Opera (FGO). He spent 4 seasons with the FGO while studying music at the University of Miami, where he also began Cello performance studies. Aaron moved to Boston at 22 to pursue a degree in Philosophy at Boston University. Soon thereafter he began taking dance more seriously and began formal training in afro-cuban rooted dances with Joel and Ana Massicot. He has spent more than 15 years training Salsa and Cha Cha, as well as the folkloric dances of Rumba and Orisha traditions. Aaron has performed on stages in 7 countries including at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Trois-Rivieres. He has been lucky enough to have performed under the stick of the Zubin Metha and Maestro Willie Waters, and has sung behind Luciano Pavarotti. As a principal dancer with Masacote Dance Company, he has performed with some of Latin music's most popular and important artists including the legendary Orchestra Harlow of Fania, Ray de la Paz, Frankie Vasquez, Roberto Roena, Gilberto Santarosa, and Luis Miguel.

WORKSHOP: Salsa On1 Shines and Partnerwork with Julissa Cruz (adv. beginner & above) - Join Julissa for a two hour Salsa On1 workshop. Not only is Julissa an amazing instructor, she is also a lot of fun so you won't want to miss learning from her! Please note this is not an introductory level workshop. Participants should be at least advanced beginner in skill level.
Julissa Cruz has been training, teaching coaching and performing dance for over 20 years. As a child, she would spend hours dancing to videos in front of the tv until her Mother enrolled her in dance classes at the age of 9. She would go on to train in jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop and the Latin dance arts. At the age of 15, she began to combine her passion for dance with a new found love of teaching at Leggz Dance Academy, first as an assistant teacher and later developing her own youth Hip Hop Program there. In addition, Julissa also served as director of the Salsa Heat Professional dance company, teaching with them for 4 years before venturing out on her own as a solo artist. Since then, she has performed and taught throughout the U.S. and beyond on her own, while collaborating with other world-renowned performers such as Andy Cruz, Gordon Neil, Ana Masacote, Benjamin Cartagena and Liz Becerra. In 2009, Julissa married and relocated to Richmond, VA where she founded Latin Vintage, as well as became the proud mother of three. In 2017, Julissa relocated to the DMV area where she started teaching and performing before moving Latin Vintage completely over to the area in 2019. She is passionate about the creation and development of dancers, as well as creating enthusiasts of the art and culture. Julissa continues to be inspired by the integrity of movement, and hopes to share this with others for years to come.
